Which vegetables grow well in the Winter Season.
Winter doesn’t have to be boring in your garden. South Africa is blessed with good weather such that even our winters aren’t as bad as some European countries. We still get some late morning sunlight. The ideal time to start planting your winter crop is between March, April, and if you want to stretch a bit May. By this time, you should have your soil ready and seedlings ready to be planted before the cold months between June and July.
My personal top ten of crops to grow in winter are
- Lettuce /Salad greens (this is my personal favourite easy to grow and survives effortlessly during the winter months)
- Beetroot (As a person that suffers from chronic iron deficiency beetroot is a much for me
- Carrots
- Onions
- Cabbage
- Kale /Spinach
- Cauliflower and Broccoli
- Broad beans
- Radishes
- Snap peas
What I love the most about winter gardening is that your crop requires minimum water, I would advise watering during the warmer parts of the day and not to late in the afternoon to prevent your crop from frost.
This is the time where you get to really enjoy your cup of tea/coffee/hot chocolate whilst basking in the warm winter morning sun.
Remember the idea behind urban gardening is that you plant the crop that you and your family enjoy, look at your space you have and find ways to optimize it for your benefit.
So, what will you planting this winter season?
