Recently I had a lot of people who say “oh I don’t have a balcony, or a backyard am I able to grow herbs?” Agh! Of course, yes! Putting limits on your garden could hinder you from having the best time of your life growing some vegetables.
Windowsill herbs not only make your house look lovely, but they also give easy access to fresh herbs to add to your culinary dish without the hassle of having to buy herbs or go outside to pick herbs and they provide some fresh aroma. Herbs are what I consider every beginner must do. They are easy going and can give generous amounts of herbs to make that meal taste awesome.
Amongst the normal things to consider such as location, drainage of your containers here are some things to help you starting up your herb garden.
- Picking the right plant
Although most herbs can grow hassle free in containers, its important to consider those that won’t give you too many problems such as basil, chives, oregano, parsley, and thyme
You have the choice of starting from seedlings or purchasing them in trays from your local nursery
- Container- Identify what container you want to use for your herbs,
If you obsessed about re-purposing. Use some of your manson jars or tin just ensure that your containers have enough drainage, and you will need a saucer or tray to help retain the water.
- Potting Mix
Potting mix is ideal for container gardening, it provides your plants with the necessary nutrients and prevents soil compaction. There are ways to make your own potting mix, but they could take some time, you can buy a bag from your local nursery.
- Humidity
Give your herbs some fresh air by opening windows now and then.
- Watering
Yes, water is important for plant growth, in this instance try not to water too much. If you see your herbs turn yellow or wilt reduce your water.
