Every crop comes with its different needs, some more than others require structures to help them grow tall and stern. Not only that this helps to prevent crop diseases and pests. I recall we once planted cucumber in the yard however, we didn’t give it support structure, as much we did reap some harvest we were also infested with pests. It took us a while to recover from that. As this also impacted other crops that were next to it.
When I think about supporting crops, I know that it will help achieve great harvests. There are crops such as tomatoes, beans, peas, CUCUMBERS, peppers that require support structures. I prefer to install them when I plant my seedlings so as not to disturb the roots especially if you will be putting the structure right next to the plant like bamboo sticks or cages.
So now you might ask what are the different types of structures? And what will suit which crop?
Well, lets see down below
Bamboo Sticks
Bamboo sticks are not only cost effective, but they are good for individual crop support. Bamboo sticks also allows you to get creative on the types of structures you want to build. You make vertical structures by joining the sticks together with cable tires, or you round them up around one crop. I love them for the creativity they give.
Cages
Cages are considered as a traditional method to supporting vegetables. Especially tomatoes. Cages are strong and sturdy. They are also able to support the weight of the tomatoes as they grow. You can make your own cage from recycled materials that you find at your local scrap yard or you can choose the option to buy from your local hardware store.
Trellis
If you have a small garden like me, trellises allow you to optimize on space. There are different types of trellises to suit your space. I made one from myself recently using old HDP pipes that hubby used for the sprinkler system. Fortunately, here you have the option of making your own or buying. I say make your own.
Walls
In the world we live in today almost every home has a boundary wall to help keep away criminals. This can also be used to make our yards look beautiful. If the conditions allow you can plant some of your crawling crops along the wall and help them go up.
Fences
If you don’t have a wall, you sure have a fence. Planting along the fence not only helps g=crops to grow but guess what is will eventually become a natural boundary wall from your beautiful crops.
Try out one and tell me what you think. Remember failures are only milestones to reaching where you want to be.
