Container gardening can look very intimidating at first, especially when trying to figure out which container for what and what types of soil mixture “potting Soil” you should use. Now am big on savings, but somewhere something must give. Investing a good store-bought compost will save you a lot of money and time.
The soil usually comes ready to use with the nutrients and water retention properties to help your crops to thrive. Although over time through watering, the soil might start to lose its nutrients this can be replaced with water soluble fertilizers in the long term this boosts the foliar feed.
If you have time on your hands and would like to make you own potting soil here is a DIY method
Your potting mix should be sandy and porous but retain moisture.
Add slow-release fertilizer and water retention granules.
Home-made mix is both parts well manured and conditioned garden soil, on part coarse sand and on part garden compost and peat moss or a moisture retaining agent such as vermiculite
Add 30g of complete fertilizer (NPK 5:7:4) and around 100g of lime to each bucket of mix. Mix all components thoroughly
