Mulching

What is Mulching?

It is a protective cover that is usually spread on to the ground. This could be in the form of sawdust, cardboards. Mulching doesn’t have much odour and is very beneficial to the home gardener. There are different types of mulches available.

WHY MULCH?

Since there are different types available the benefits are also considered to vary.

Reduces Evaporation

Mulching assist in reducing evaporation moisture from the soil. When evaporation is reduced it aids in ensuring that moisture content is stable and prevents damages to crops such as tomatoes, potatoes as they mature

Prevents compaction and crusting of soil

Especially after rain, this in turn helps to minimize soil erosion.

Supresses Weed growth

Placing a layer of at least 8-15cm of thick mulch will minimize the growth of most weeds. Mulching also helps in weakening the growth of more vigorous annuals making it easier to control using a Dutche hoe or by hand pulling.

Great Insulator

Mostly tuber crops and root crops benefit from this property. It regulates moisture content and topsoil, which promotes root growth

I surely will be using mulch this winter since I will be growing some root crops beetroots, radish, and carrots.
