Hey Tribe, Things have slowed down in the garden, this allows me to take some time to do one of the things that I absolutely love, which is crafting using old recyclable materials. This was inspired by my Environmental Management lecturer, where she came to class with some beautiful products that were make from recyclable materials, such as newspapers, tins, and glass products. At the time I really didn’t think much of it, as I thought “Hmmm that’s interesting”. It wasn’t until I had my first child, at a period where I was unemployed, and hubby allowed me time to look after our child instead of rushing to look for a job.
To keep busy, I then started to recycle some of our waste, like jam jars, tins and bottles and turn them into decorative pieces for the household. Interesting enough was friends and family, started ordering these products from me. Unexpectedly, I turned into a business formerly known as called Tumelo Craft, the business operated for a good two years, and I enjoyed every part of it. Unfortunately, our family started to expand, and I was then employed full time and I lost sight of the business, but never stopped my love for repurposing materials. I continued to make things for my own house and relatives.
Currently I have managed to gain confidence and started the business again and it has brought me immense pleasure. Aside from gardening, getting my hands dirty with craft paints and sticky with the glue brings me so much peace. Being an anxious person, crafting just allows me to just breathe and live in the moment. I repurpose just about anything; I am the girl that doesn’t mind visiting junk yards to get scarp materials and give it new meaning.
There is a lot of materials you can repurpose even from your own home
Old jam jars
Tins (from preserved foods such as beans)
Sauce bottles
Plastic bottles (These can be very helpful in the garden also if you don’t have a greenhouse, you can use it as a cloche to help your seedlings grow.
