Well in simple terms explained a doula is women that is trained to care for another women during labour and birth. Some call them “birth companions” they undergo does not equip them to fulfil the role of a midwife or medical specialist., but doe provide insight into methods that can ease labour and information on the physiology of labour and birth, normal process, pain relief and signs that extra can help may be needed for the mommy or baby.
Why would you need a doula?
Studies have shown the benefit of labouring mothers having doula, they reveal that women supported by doula’s are less likely to require caesarean deliveries, induction, and pain relief. Births that are attended by doula are likely to be shorter with less complications. Improves enjoyment and relaxation for mommies, daddies and babies and assist in creating conditions conducive for breastfeeding and bonding. In the olden times the labouring mother is usually supported by her sister, sister cousins and mother, in today’s time doulas fulfil that role.
What can a doula do for you and your birth experience? Depends on the doula you pick along with preferences and at what stage of pregnancy are you in. Some doulas get involved throughout your pregnancy journey helping you map out your birth plan and easing your labour and birth jitters. Some assistants whilst you in the home awaiting to go to the hospital and once at the hospital they take upon many roles and responsibilities depending on the needs of the mother to be. However, her primary roles are a continuous source of comfort, encouragement, and support during labour. A doula can also perform the role of a mediator and advocate ready to speak for you as needed to translate medical terms and explain procedures and to generally run interference with hospital personnel. The doula does not take away the role of the father during labour, a doula is meant to the lead of the couple she is serving.
