I am pretty sure you are thinking “WHAT ON EARTH IS SHE ON ABOUT”?! Well, believe it or not, doulas are not there to replace dads during pregnancy nor through labour. They are there to help both partners support each other to the best of their abilities. A great doula knows when to take a step back and allow dad to support his partners.
We live in a time and generation where men want to be involved throughout pregnancy and labour. The intension is great, but it can get a bit overwhelming for dads and when that happens doulas are there to also help dad to relax and be informed about the transitions that are happening to his partner’s body. Childbirth, especially for first time birth can go on for long hours, having your doula there will help dad to go catch some fresh air, go change clothes, or go get some snacks.
Here are some reasons why doulas are also for dad:
Doulas provide guidance and information for them to better support their partners.
Doulas allow dads to take a “break” without feeling like they have abandoned their partners.
Doulas gives dad space to comfort and care for their partners whilst they bring them snacks.
Doulas can explain in detail on the labour progress and how best to support mom.
Doulas help build birthing confidence for dads.
I have inserted a clip below that I got from wombs website, where dads explain their feelings towards having doulas at the birth.
Enjoy!
